Its been a while…

…a very long while.

For the past year or so, my blogging game has been spotty at best. I went back to school and really put a lot of focus on that. I studied way smarter than I did when I was in Uni or even in my earlier school years. I surprised myself and it paid off. I did well, could have done better but overall, I did well. Am still studying though and have an exam next week. You never stop learning you know 🙂

In one of my older posts I mentioned that I didn’t really like my occupation and that I wanted to change my career path. Well, its grown on me 🙂 Guess sometimes you’ve just got to stick it out. Still, I went back to school and am now pursuing yet another career path.

So earlier this year I got the opportunity to actually do what I love (I work in healthcare by the way). I got to schedule my hours on the most part and sometimes worked double shifts (worked on weekends too!) just because. I enjoyed working so much and I honestly think I got carried away. I also worked the graveyard shift which meant longer hours but that was not a problem for me. Sunday nights were great because come Monday morning, I’d be heading home to sleep. On a Monday morning! None of that Monday morning blues business 😀

As can be expected, I burned out. One morning I woke up, ironed my shirt and went straight back to bed. I just didn’t feel like going to work and so I didn’t. I think I spent most of that day in bed. The next day, I felt so rested. I hadn’t realized how hard I was pushing myself and how exhausted my physical and mental self was. Looking back, it was apparent to others. I remember one of my patients telling me that he had seen me that morning and asking how come I was still there…it was almost 7pm then. Another time a nurse kept asking me if I was okay, that I looked tired. Another one straight out told me to go home. I told her my shift wasn’t over and she said, “go home”. I now realize that for me to be effective, I need to take care of myself. Rest.

Am not working at the moment. I took about two months off to study and this hard! I have no motivation (don’t know how I did it before). My exam date is drawing near and I feel like I know nothing. I’ve been having this feeling of dread hovering over me…ignored it for a while (am pretty good at distracting myself) but I’ve got to face the fact that come next week…I just need to keep studying. On the bright side, now that I have all this “free” time, I put myself on a schedule to keep me from scrambling. You know how it is when panic sets in 😀 I’ve set aside about 9 hours of personal study a day for the next week till my paper. Sometimes I get 10. I need more hours but thats the best I can do now. And I like being on a schedule. Makes me more productive.

Moving on, lets ‘talk’ about my fitness and nutrition game. Let me start by stating that I struggle with motivation. I tend to forget my ‘why’. Why I workout, why I eat clean, why anything…I need a vision board or something. I have so much on my mind and my priorities get messed up. Anyway, my fitness game…not good. I workout here and there, get sore and stop working out for a while.

Nutrition-wise, night shifts had me eating one good meal a day. Other days, I just didn’t eat lunch. I never liked buying lunch (a proper meal) at work…couldn’t get over how much it cost for one and so I’d have snacks instead. I ate out quite a bit in the evenings on my way home. That would be my supper. Now that am home for a while, there is so much food to eat here 🙂 I just walk to the fridge or take a study break (walk to a fast food place) and grab something to eat. Fact: I love fast food. I watched a bit of the documentary ‘What the health’ and about 10 min in, I turned it off and went had fries and fried chicken. And soda. I freaking love Coca cola. Like, whats wrong with me??!!

I’ve also been going to the cinema a lot. Another one of my nighttime study breaks. See how I distract myself? Its an expensive habit especially once you realize you’ve been to the cinema twice in the same week. So my finances are taking a hit. And why was everyone born in June, July, August?! My cousin bakes and I’ve been ordering and gifting cakes left, right and center! Generous much? Its got to stop. And need I mention my guilty pleasure? The mug cake?

You’d think I’d have gained weight because of my nasty habits but I haven’t. My weight hovers around 56, 57 and 58kg. Am 5ft tall and according to the BMI chart, thats good weight. I have however, had people saying that I’ve gained weight. I do look bigger. I’ve lost a lot of muscle mass (because I don’t really workout) and in its place, I’ve gained fat (remember my love for junk food?). I feel fluffy/squishy/soft/rounder…all that. I also feel like my bras got smaller but am still a member of the #ittybittycommittee 😀 I guess my lack of weight gain is due to the fact that am still physically active. For example, I love taking walks (I’ve even blocked off an hour in my daily schedule just for evening walks). Of course when I have plans to go somewhere for the day I walk for more than an hour.

I think I’ll end this here. Not the most uplifting Not an uplifting post but I felt like putting this up. So much for a life update.

I’ll do better.

Have a great weekend!

Gone curly

Remember the straight hairstyle from my previous post? Well, I wore that for slightly over a week and then switched to a textured hairstyle last Saturday. I have been rocking this style ever since and am in no rush to change it. I really do enjoy wearing my shorter hair out and am not concerned that by the fact that am not protective styling (keeping my ends tucked away). Heck, I’ve been wearing my hair out for close to 3 weeks! And turns out I really love this style ’cause…well here’s a pic from 3 years ago….

Its a keeper alright!

And talk of low manipulation. I haven’t combed my hair in a week!

Happy St. Patrick’s day!

😀

I cut my hair!

My hair today. Day 3 hair always looks better.

My hair today. Day 3 hair always looks better.

I gave myself a haircut and now my hair is really short. Its at shoulder length – barely grazing arm pit length. The last time my hair was this short was back in February 2014. I don’t think I can call this most recent episode with my scissors a major trim because I took off a lot of length. Am just going to call it what it is…a haircut.

So, from the beginning right?

This past Monday I really took the time to do my hair. I washed it with a sulfate free shampoo first, then did a deep conditioning treatment. After that I applied some leave-in conditioner and heat protection serum. I then proceeded to blow it dry and then I finally straightened it using a flat iron. As I was straightening it, I trimmed off the ends section by section. I did this throughout my head and was quite thorough because my last trim was back in July. 8 months ago. I do do not recommend going that long without a trim. I went overboard with the trim but that didn’t bother me because my plan was to go shorter anyway.

After the whole straightening and trimming process was done. I got into the fun part. The actual cutting. I had already decided that I wanted to cut my hair into a bob hairstyle and so thats what I did. I went for a one-length long bob hairstyle because in as much as I wanted shorter hair, cutting it to neck length was not going to happen. It would have been great to cut it to arm pit length (my favourite length) but the front pieces of my hair weren’t that long to begin with so I went shorter. Now my hair is at shoulder length all round (ish) and I love it.

blunt

I love the blunt cut because it makes me feel edgy (futuristic even) 😀 It is a little harsh and doesn’t have a natural look to it so to counteract that, I bumped my ends (curled them under) for a more polished look. Yea, I can’t decide if I want to look edgy or polished 😐

bumped

I think I did a good job on my hair. I got weave checked! And my Mum said it looked professionally done (after coming to terms with the fact that I had cut my hair. She couldn’t believe how much I cut off). Its only been 2 days since the haircut and I sometimes find myself thinking about how much I cut off. Especially when am seated and realize that my hair isn’t caught between my back and the chair. Or when I can’t see it under my armpits when I have my arms raised while standing in front of a mirror (weird observation). Or when it doesn’t get caught in my towel because its hanging higher (when I wrap the towel around my body under my arm pits. Again with the underarm reference point. Yea. Like I said. Weird observations). But then I look (like really look) at my hair in the mirror and see how good it is and I have no regrets. That change in hairstyle I always wanted…I’ve got it now.

Feeling badass bold 😀

Oh, and today marks 4 years since my last salon visit!

You asked, I answered…

…So lets get to it.

1) What is your hair regimen?
This is subject to change but basically;
Daily: Moisturize and seal
Weekly: Cowash followed by a deep conditioning treatment
Monthly: Shampoo wash followed by a deep conditioning treatment

2) What is your wash day routine? What is your cowashing routine?
See question 1 but if you want a detailed post, let me know in the comment section below.

3) Are 2 wash days a week too much?
It depends. If you are shampooing your hair on each wash day, thats too much in my opinion. But if you must, I’d recommend a sulfate-free shampoo. Or you could wash your hair with conditioner only instead of shampoo i.e. cowash. Chances are, if you’re washing your hair every week, it doesn’t get that dirty and you could skip shampooing every now and then and cowash instead. Side note: When my hair was natural, I used to cowash every single day and that worked for me. Now that am relaxed I opt for a weekly wash but because I workout (or sometimes just want to refresh my hair) a midweek cowash does it for me.

4) What products do you use to moisturize and seal your hair?
I currently use the ORS hair lotion or plain water as moisturizers, and coconut oil or Extra virgin olive oil as sealants.

5) What are your current hair products?

stash

As you can see, am a bit of a product junkie…I’ll share whats in my stash in another post.

6) How often do you use your hair products?
I use my products as per my hair regimen (see question 1). Some are for daily, weekly , monthly use.

7) When do you use a leave-in conditioner?
After I get out of the shower, I wrap my hair in a towel or T-shirt for a few minutes (5-10 min), once most of the water has been soaked up and non is dripping, I apply the leave-in conditioner.

8) What routine do you follow when doing strengthening treatments?
I use henna to strengthen my hair. Before hennaing i shampoo my hair and let it air dry as is before applying the henna paste. I then apply the henna, let it sit in my hair overnight, rinse it off, then do a deep conditioning treatment and proceed to styling once thats been washed off. I have several posts on how I do this but if you want an updated one, let me know in the comment section below. Side note: If the brand of henna am using has a natural cleanser in it (e.g. Shikakai), then I skip the shampooing step.

These are just some of the questions I received. The rest will be answered in upcoming posts.

Got any questions for me?

Good day 🙂
