Weekend in the life

Another week, another blog post

Not much going on in hair ville so I thought I’d put up a different kind of post. The goal was to post about my 24hr work day but plans changed so instead, I have bits from the weekend to share with you. Here goes…

I woke up pretty early on Saturday and hydrated. I used the last of my green tea.

Given the kind of day I was going to have, I knew working out was paramount. I don’t work out regularly but when if am going to have a particularly challenging day…working out is a must.

I dilly dallied at some point and had to do a rush job with the showering and getting ready. Thank God I’d done my nails the night before! I didn’t have time for breakfast. I just grabbed a banana and figured I’d have breakfast at the office. I was out the door just in time to make it to my 7am shift.

Of course when I got to the office there was no coffee available. Just tea and Milo so I just shelved the whole breakfast idea. A couple of hours later I was sent out to the field (Ruai) where a building had collapsed. There wasn’t much to do really. We just stood around waiting for the rubble to be cleared so we could get to the people trapped underneath.

Hours later, rescue efforts were still underway. The sun was really beating down on us at that point and I had no qualms when someone handed me a cold packet of milk. And another. I downed a whole liter of milk! Never mind I had a liter of water which I left untouched :/

At some point dark clouds rolled in and it started to rain just like its been raining everyday. I got back to the office at around 5, had a banana and 4 weetabix biscuits for late lunch with milk. Yes. I need a dairy cow at this point. I also mixed in some chia seeds and ground flax seeds.

My shift was supposed to end at 7pm but they let me off at 6:30 when they found out I was heading to the hospital after that for the night shift over there. It was unnecessary but welcome 🙂 I freshened up and off I went. It took me an hour door-to-door so I got to the hospital at around 7:30pm. I didn’t have to go to the hospital. I just enjoy what I do over there and so I go in whenever I can #nosociallife.

I worked until 10:30, went for a tea break. Worked some more and then at around 2 I started yawning and yawning and yawning. Usually I go to sleep at 3-6 during night shifts but this time I was beat. It was time to leave. I ubered, got into bed and was out as soon as my head hit the pillow.

I woke up a number of times after that, staying up just long enough to check the time. Finally at 8 something on Sunday morning I got out of bed, had breakfast and lounged on the couch till 1 something #zeroproductivity. I showered, headed out to lunch, got back home, took a bath…the heat was unbearable that afternoon plus I had walked quite a bit…I needed to freshen up. And then I went to bed at around 5pm. My sleep cycle is totally screwed up.

I woke up at 1 am thinking it was 7am 😐 ate food I had carried home from yesterday lunch – KFC chicken and a twister which is basically a wrap. I got online and put this post together. Am in the 2nd shift at the hospital today so I have a free morning.

Have a great week!

“Artfully messy”

Its been 1 week and 2 days since my last relaxer touch up

This has been my hairstyle for the past week…

A far cry from my sleek bun look

Okay, maybe not artfully done but you get the point. Messy but not so messy. I just use three hair pins to hold my hair in place and am good to go. Can I just mention that I haven’t combed my hair in a week? I plan to keep that up till my next wash day which is hopefully 2 weeks away. Its amazing what you can get away with when you have textured hair! 😀

Of long wash days…

Last Thursday was wash day for me. I’d gone for close to 3 weeks without washing my hair but since I always wore it in a bun, my hair stayed moisturized for the most part and so it didn’t bother me much. However, because I kept slapping gel onto my hair to keep everything sleek (not to mention my daily use of oils) I developed some serious residue build up.

And so I washed my hair.

I just shampooed and used regular rinse out conditioner (no deep conditioning). My hair felt so fresh, light and flowy afterwards. I hadn’t realized how weighed down it had been! I loved it. I didn’t want to add much (if anything) to it and so after applying a leave-in conditioner and an oil, I pulled it back into a ponytail and rocked it like that…flyaways and all. That was my Thursday and Friday hairstyle.

Come Saturday morning, I felt rather drab. I was 10 weeks post by then and itching to do a relaxer touch up. I also realized that my hair was way too light. I needed to do a strengthening treatment. A henna treatment. My last one had been in December…so much for my monthly hennaing plan :/

I decided to do both treatments one the same day – for the record, I’d never done that before. That was going to be a long weekend for me…I even turned down weekend invites and had no shame explaining that I would be occupied doing my hair 😀

Lets just say that I did not do my hair on Saturday but instead spent the entire day in bed. I had come off a night shift that morning and the plan was to sleep till sometime in the afternoon. But…I woke up at around 6:30pm. Anyway, at 9pm, I made a henna paste. I meant to let it sit and release the dye for 3 hours before applying it to my hair but guess what? I fell asleep! Again! Till 6 something the next morning! Am telling you I had so much sleep its unbelievable. Its almost as if I had been drugged!

Note my henna stained nail? Its been that long.

Moving on…on Sunday, I finally got to do my hair. I did a relaxer touch up at around 1pm. There was no power or running water at home but that was not going to deter me. I managed.

After shampooing out the relaxer, I let my hair airdry, run errands, lounged, cooked, did random stuff basically. Of course my hair dried and I had to dampen it in order to have a easy time applying the henna afterwards.

Mid-step henna treatment

I kept the henna in my hair overnight, rinsed it off and then did a deep conditioning treatment on Monday. I thought I had some of the cholesterol treatment I use left over but no. There was very little of it left. I ended up mixing all sorts of products to have something to treat my hair with. I used the left over cholesterol treatment, TRESemme conditioner, ORS hair mayo, ORS replenishing conditioner, Glycerin, avocado, castor, olive and Jamaican black castor oils. I just went for it.

Post henna. No products in my hair

Deep conditioning

After rinsing my hair and applying my products, I let it air-dry in two French braids. I kept the style in for two days – till yesterday since I didn’t need to go anywhere.

Am definitely not looking forward to washing my hair anytime soon. Am currently shooting for 2 weeks but with little-to-no-gel use, I should be able to push it to 3 weeks granted my hair stays moisturized.

Have a blessed week!

My obsession…

…blunt, thick ends!

That’s one of the reasons I’ve been cutting my hair over and over in the past year. My hair doesn’t grow evenly all round. Does anyone’s? Add to that the inevitable wear and tear and this is what I end up with…

Ive been looking at the picture below from my previous post and couldn’t help but wonder what was going on with the hair on the left side of my head.

That side never wants to behave well! Like what’s going on with the ends? I hadn’t noticed how different both sides we’re. I took other pics a week later…

The right side is Fuller for obvious reasons. I initially wanted to even it out but decided against it…that’s being extra I think. Overall, my hair is healthy and looks good. So no more snipping for now.

1.5 more days till wash day (I spotted dandruff!)

What’s your obsession?

Happy new year!

I know. I know, January is practically over but the year is still young. Right? Anyway, let’s talk hair, shall we?

Lately, I have been loving wearing my hair straight

January hair

I straightened it, trimmed and cut a little bit off (no more than 2″) at the very beginning of the year. I washed it 2 weeks later, gave myself a blow out (hated it), rewashed and straightened it again 4 days later.

No scraggly ends

I love that I don’t have to do much to my hair right now. It’s pretty low maintenance, especially since I got it really straight. It’s flat but that’s not a bother once I shape the ends so they’re not just hanging down straight.

Also, am able to stretch the style for 2 weeks. My scalp at that point is usually not that great (it gets itchy) but nowadays, I don’t have a lot of time to do my hair like I used to. Plus, straightening is time consuming so I try to make the style last longer.

Wash day for me comes around every 2 weeks. On Thursdays. I basically shampoo, deep condition, apply leave-in conditioner and heat protection serum, blow dry and flat iron my hair. That’s it. In the course of the week, I use oil sheen spray on it or apply an oil as needed.

That’s about all the hair update I have for now.

Hope you had a great weekend!

Have a favour filled 2018

I got robbed

Last Friday I got back home at around 9:30 in the morning from a night shift. At that point I had been up for a good 25 hours straight. That was my first time back to doing night shifts since July – my routine is all over the place :/ Anyway, I showered, ate, rested, woke up and ate again, cleaned, food shopped, ironed my shirt, repainted my nails…yea, I took my time. Needless to say I left home for day 2 of my night shift pretty late.

I got to town at around 7:00pm and was dropped smack in the middle of a busy street. Getting through the rush hour crowds coupled with the crazy traffic leaving town was mental. I mean really crazy. Turns out that while I was busy minding my own business trying not to get knocked down, someone else was busy robbing me and I didn’t even know it. It all happened so fast!

I had crossed a road and something just didn’t feel right…they were too many of us pedestrians. I felt like checking my bag and when I did, I realized that it was halfway open! My heart immediately sunk because I just knew my phone was gone. I quickly rummaged through my bag while walking and when I didn’t feel my phone, I zipped it up and kept on walking. I mean, there were too many people on the streets…there was no way of telling who robbed me.

After a few minutes I thought of my wallet, checked my bag again and also couldn’t feel it. When I boarded another bus…I take two buses to work…I near emptied my bag and did a thorough search. Turns out both my phone and wallet had been stolen 😦 Fortunately, I had a 200 shilling note in my jeans. That was all the money I had on me.

I didn’t really have time to process what had happened because work kept me pretty distracted. We were so busy. It wasn’t like a good work night either…I work in the Emergency department so I see death occur but Friday night was just rough for everyone involved. Death after death after death. All of a sudden, my problems seemed so minimal. As morning approached, work eased up.

I had told a few people about my phone being stolen and what not and they told me to report it to the police, they have police hotlines at the hospital plus we have police coming in every now and then but I was just out of it and couldn’t be bothered. I clocked out and decided to walk to town with a colleague. It was a good, well deserved long walk.

We made a stop at a certain organization where we’d both trained at and a man came in seeking help. My colleague and I cleaned and dressed his wounds. He told me that he had been attacked and his phone had been stolen. I just knew God was trying to tell me something. I mean, what were the odds of this encounter? We hadn’t even planned on going there. We don’t even work there yet we were asked to help him…the people who work there would have done it but they asked if we could do it instead and we gladly obliged.

Anyway, my colleague and I went our separate ways. I had a few more stops to make like the banks and phone company because my ATM card had been stolen along with the wallet. Turns out I couldn’t get replacements for either the ATM card or SIM cards without my ID (which was also stolen). At the very least, I needed an ID waiting card which I could get at Huduma center which was just across the street but, they don’t open on Saturdays. That was turning out to be a shitty morning. I actually shed a tear which I quickly wiped off.

I finally got home at midday, told my brother what had happened, got the laptop and started changing passwords to all my social media platforms. I didn’t want the thief checking into my accounts. Meanwhile, my dear brother had called the rest of my family and told them what happened and they in turn called me (using his phone of course) to check in on me. I also made some calls to check on my business and for the first time in weeks, things were looking up. I felt that God truly has my back. At around 3:00pm (another 24 hours being up), I went to bed. Two and a half hours later, my brother woke me up to say goodbye…he was leaving for a few days. I didn’t go back to bed till around 11 something.

I don’t even know what time I woke up this morning. I had my breakfast and watched Iron Man again. Am on a mission to watch all the Marvel movies in chronological order this holiday season. I watched ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ the other day. I think I have 15 more to go. Right now am creating this post as I cook some meat for lunch and then I’ll do some cleaning and get ready for the week ahead.

I won’t go to work tomorrow. I’ll go to the police and report the theft (is it too late?) and also get an abstract which I’ll need to apply for a new ID. On the bright side, I get to change the photo on my ID 😀 . I’ll also finally get a SIM card replacement. I have backup phone which I can’t use because I don’t have a SIM card (ridiculous). I also need to go to the bank and also get a new health insurance card…the other one was also stolen. Lets just say that tomorrow will be all about getting stuff I lost replaced.

I hope you don’t mind the pictureless post. My photos are now gone. I somehow managed to surpass the photo capacity on my cloud so I don’t have backups there 😦 Anyway, another week is coming up and I have so much to be grateful for despite this little bump in the road.

Till next time!
