Update + Henna treatment #4

HAPPY EASTER!!!

Am 4 weeks post relaxer today!

Am back to blogging after a week long absence so here is what i’ve been up to to since last Friday…

I wore my hair in a bantu-knot out last Saturday…thought i should do something different to my hair since i was going to my Grandma’s. Lets just say that that was a major fail! My hair was all over the place and frizzy. I just ended up pinning it back (thank God for the numerous bobby pins i had in my handbag) At the end of that day my hair was rather dry.

On Sunday night i did an oil prepoo, then a full strength henna treatment the following day. This time round, application was easier and so everything went smoothly. I had 2 extra pairs of gloves too after last weeks fiasco 😀

I only kept the henna in my hair for 2 and a half hours then rinsed it out and did a cowash. I have to use a lot of conditioner after the henna treatment because my hair never feels as soft as i would like it to and the henna takes forever to rinse out out.

I got distracted after leaving the bathroom and as a result i totally forgot to apply my leave-in conditioner and moisturize and seal my hair! Because of this, my hair didn’t dry soft and it was quite frizzy. So the following day (Tuesday) i just rinsed it with plain water in the shower and proceeded with the usual product application.

I decided to do 2 french braids since i was going to be home all week (mostly indoors).

On Wednesday evening i had to go out so i took down the braids for a braid out look. I redid the braids later that night and kept them in till now (Friday). I will wear my hair out today in a braid out then maybe a curly ponytail tomorrow (Saturday) then wash my hair on Sunday.

Thats pretty much this weeks’ hair update.

In other news, has Nairobi ran out of conditioners? Or more specifically the “Enliven conditioner?”

Enliven Conditioner

Enliven Conditioner

I love this conditioner, and the last time i saw it in the supermarket, i stocked up on it. But now i have one bottle left and i can’t seem to find it being sold anywhere! It always goes out of stock like this which is why i stock up when i can. I hate to think that i might have to switch to something else.

One other thing, i think i will have to bring my personal weekly henna challenge to a halt. I believe my hair is doing great because last weekend, my cousin -Charity touched my hair and said that it felt strong. I couldn’t tell, possibly because i’m always touching it but she seemed amazed so i guess the henna treatments worked. I’ll probably do another henna treatment after a month or so.

How do i wear my hair?

Am 3 weeks post relaxer today!

My everyday Bun(s)

indoor lazy bun

This is basically what my hair looks like when am lounging around the house. A very loose bantu-knot bun. Its also how i wear it to bed.

my neat bun

This is my typical everyday slick bun. Sometimes i like to wear it higher up on my crown.

A lot of people on hair forums ask me how i normally wear my hair. The reason they ask this is because i stretch my relaxer for a relatively long period and don’t get braids or weaves during that time.

Honestly, i bun my hair a lot! I have been doing this for so long…way before i started my hair journey. Its fast and easy to do. It can get boring and doesn’t always look good, but thats just how i wear my hair. Sometimes i rock a ponytail.

Other times i do braid outs, bantu-knot outs or i just wear my hair out after flat ironing it. But that is usually if i have something special going on that i want to spruce up for.

Relaxer update(s)

Feb '12 - Aug '12 - Mar '13

Feb ’12 – Aug ’12 – Mar ’13

There, i finally have my latest length check pic up. I took this pic after my first post relaxer wash (hair had been air dried) so my hair wasn’t straight all the way…had to grab it from behind to somehow straighten it.

I’ve also replaced my old homepage’s thumbnail pic (Aug 2012 relaxer) with the latest March 2013 relaxer one.

My next length check will be in September (i have to stop doing random length checks every now and then).

Weekly henna challenge

I have decided to start a personal ‘weekly henna challenge’. This is the regimen that i will follow for the next three weeks:

Daily/Every other day
*Moisturize and seal

Weekly
*Oil prepoo
*Full strength Henna treatment
*Cowash
*Deep conditioning treatment (midweek)

After the 3 weeks are up, i will go back to doing henna gloss treatments either biweekly or monthly…or however often i choose to.

The henna i use contains Bhringraj/maka and Shikakai which are natural cleansers/shampoos so i won’t need to use my usual shampoos.

Thats my new simple hair regimen!

Monday hair + rant

air drying in a ponytail

air drying in a ponytail

I did a deep conditioning treatment on dry hair for about 2hrs today then air dried in a ponytail after moisturizing and sealing. I know the last time deep conditioned was about 2 days ago but i just felt like doing it. Besides i wore my hair out yesterday in a bantu knot out for an out-of-town trip so my hair was a bit dry, dirty from dust and sweaty.

Normally i would deep condition overnight but somehow 2 hours was enough today. My hair is soft and moisturized. I also have VERY little shedding going on thanks to the henna treatment i did on Friday.

I applied the deep conditioner the same way you would apply relaxer (am practicing) and am happy to report that it took me 15 minutes to do so, smoothing included. I know having no new growth helped but am happy with what i was able to achieve.

In other news, someone stole my phone at a party over the weekend and that is really stressing me out. My whole life is in there…documents, dates, lists, contacts, my life, aagggrrr!!! I don’t even know who to suspect! The shameless thief also stole the host’s wallet!

Henna # 3

On Thursday night-15th March (after posting this), i did an overnight prepoo using a coconut-peppermint oil mix. I first massaged the oil onto my scalp then applied some to my hair and left it in for about 6hrs.

At 4 a.m i was awake so i decided to make a henna paste.

I stayed up for a bit then fell asleep till my alarm went off at 7:30. I kept hitting the snooze button and when i couldn’t take it anymore (15 min later), i got out of bed. Boy was i sleepy! I like to let the henna sit for 3hrs as per the instructions on the pack.

I have never done a full strength henna treatment, i always make a gloss by mixing it with conditioner and an oil but this time, i was operating on zombie mode and forgot to make a gloss!!!

I just got my gloves, ripped one while trying to get it on (i didn’t have an extra pair 😦 ), grabbed my henna paste, dragged myself to the sink and started applying it to my hair. Application wasn’t smooth/easy. It felt like i couldn’t properly coat all of my hair and so the process took longer than usual. When i was all done, it hit me…”i didn’t make a gloss”!

All i could think off was how red my hair would turn. I was a little scared. I covered my hair with a plastic bag and scarf, set my alarm to go off after 3hrs then went back to bed.

Yea, so my phoned died on me (alarm didn’t go off) and i woke up 6hrs later! It was as if i had been roofied! I was still so darn sleepy! I didn’t even want to think about how much the henna had dyed my hair in those 6hrs. Murphy’s law was surely at work.

I hoped into the shower immediately to rinse my hair (lets not talk about what the floor looked like). I rinsed, rinsed and rinsed and still couldn’t tell if i had gotten all the henna out. Then i did 2 cowashes (i used so much conditioner).

My hair felt ok. Soft but not as soft as it usually is. I was going to end my wash routine there but then decided to do a deep conditioning treatment because i could still smell the henna in my hair.

I deep conditioned for 3hrs and then rinsed my hair and that was it. My hair felt butter soft and smelled nice 🙂 I applied my products then let it air dry in a slick bun.

My hair has a reddish undertone to it. Its not noticeable really unless am out in the sun…my cousin noticed it yesterday while we were out. I think i will continue using Amla oil since i will be hennaing often. Amla oil naturally darkens hair.

The amount of hair that am shedding now is way less than what i used to consider normal! I have therefore decided to do 3 other consecutive full strength henna treatments. After that, i will go back to doing henna gloss treatments. Hopefully this will strengthen my hair further and continue nourishing my hair follicles.

Next time i’ll make sure i have an extra pair of gloves.
