Pumpkin pie smoothie recipe + random chatter

Hi guys! I hope you all had a great week and that my American readers had a wonderful Thanksgiving day too. The festive season is surely upon us. Check out these pics i snapped at the mall last night…

They're not done decorating though

They’re not done decorating though

Anyway, i got a request (From my namesake Joyce) to share the recipe for the Pumpkin pie smoothie pictured in my previous post so, here it is.

pumpkin pie smoothie ingredients

1 glass/cup of milk
1/4 cup of pumpkin puree
2 frozen bananas
1 tbs honey (you can use 2-3 dates instead)
1 tsp vanilla essence/extract
1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice (cinnamon + ginger + nutmeg)

Place all the ingredients into a blender (milk first). Blend until smooth. Pour into a glass, pop in a straw and serve immediately.

To answer any questions you might have…

I made the pumpkin puree by first scooping out the pumpkin seeds then heating up the pumpkin in the microwave for about 7 minutes. Simply wrap the pumpkin in parchment paper (the kind used for baking) and poke a few holes in the paper to let the steam out (then heat the pumpkin). You can also use an oven for this step though that will take longer.

frozen bananas

frozen bananas

Using frozen bananas ensures a creamier and chilled smoothie (in my opinion). If you don’t have frozen bananas, a few ice cubes will suffice. And no, they will not thin out the smoothie 😀

I haven’t seen any pumpkin pie spice being sold here in Nairobi but you can make your own by mixing:
1/2tsp cinnamon
1/4tsp ginger
1/8tsp nutmeg

Be careful with the spices. I had to adjust the proportions to my liking afterwards (didn’t measure that out, sorry). Also, instead of throwing away the pumpkin seeds like i did (wasteful much?), you can roast them and have them as a snack later.

There are so many ways to make this smoothie. This is just one way and next time am definitely going to do it differently.

Since am on the topic of food and festivities (kinda), i couldn’t help but notice that Macaroni and Cheese is a favourite Thanksgiving dish, (and turkey too of course, but i’ve had that…never had Mac & cheese though) so, i’ll be making some soon (minus the butter). And i also want to try out the Green bean casserole. I think its safe to say i’ll be packing on some extra weight this season -_- (I have a confession to make about how my fitness journey is going but i’ll save that for later 😮 )

Totally random: Fav tracks at the moment as in whats on my playlist as i blog – this very moment 🙂
Regina Spektor – Samson
Regina Spektor – The call
Anna Kendrick – Cups (when am gone)
Ben Howard – Oats in the water
The civil wars – The one that got away
Bruno Mars – Talking to the moon

Am going to stop here elsewise this is going to be a very VERY long post.

11 weeks post

Lately, my bun of choice has been the braided bun. It keeps my hair moisturized for longer and I don’t need to unravel the braid everyday. All I do is remove the hair tie in the evenings and put it back in the mornings after moisturizing and sealing. Simple.

As a result of this ‘new’ routine, I don’t comb my hair daily. My new growth on the other hand is really popping. Like seriously. I have tight curls at my roots and they seem tighter than ever probably because I haven’t used any heat on them (and also because I don’t comb my hair, I guess).

Anyway, am thinking about ending this stretch soon. Am also toying with the idea of just flat ironing it this weekend. My last heat pass was almost 5 months ago and I miss wearing my hair down…all straight. Then again the rainy season is here (though its only been raining at night) and I don’t want to risk getting caught in the rain and have my hair puff up. What to do? What to do?

Have a great Friday and weekend as I muse over this 😀
(am currently blogging using my phone…will add pics soon)

The Procrastinating Beauty Blogger Tag

First of all, you know am not a beauty blogger, but i love doing tags! So here goes…

1. Name a beauty routine that you rarely do?
Using a face mask. I even gave mine away because i just never used to use it.

2. Is washing your make-up brushes something that you do regularly?
Yes. I have acne prone skin so i know the consequence of not doing so.

3. How long will you last with chipped nail polish?
A day if i don’t plan on leaving the house. I tend to bump into people I know when am not all neat and proper 🙂

4. How long will you put off buying/replacing a beauty product, even if you need it?
A couple of days to a week.

5. What is your worst beauty habit?
Going to bed with makeup :/ And no, not because I want to look pretty in bed 😀

6. Name something non-beauty related that you put off doing all the time.
Grocery shopping i guess?

7. When going out somewhere, do you leave getting ready to the last minute?
Yes and No. It really depends on where am going.

8. Can you commit to spending bans?

9. How organized is your make-up and nail polish collection?
I only have the basic “everyday” makeup (not much by any standards) so it pretty organized.
My nail polish collection (yea this one’s a bit of a collection) is also well organized. I usually leave out a few bottles to choose from. The rest are stashed away.

I tag everyone to do this 😀

The Procrastinating Hair Blogger Tag

I know I have been MIA for a while…its kinda turning into a nasty habit! Anyway, i found the beauty blogger tag and the ‘procrastination’ bit is what grasped my attention. I thought it would be fun to tweak the questions and turn it into a ‘hair blogger tag’ instead since am a hair blogger 😀 I also did the original ‘beauty’ tag and that post will be up next. Enjoy…

1. Name a hair care step/procedure that you rarely do?
Trimming my hair.

2. Is cleaning your hair tools something that you do regularly?
No. Not really. I clean them when I think they need cleaning.

3. How long will you put off buying/replacing a hair product, even if you need it?
A week to a month. Depending on how soon I need to use it.

4. What is your worst hair habit?
Snapping off split ends using my fingers when am bored and happen to have my hair down. I know. Its bad.

5. Name something non-hair related that you put off doing all the time?
Getting out of bed? Those extra 5 minutes I give myself somehow stretch to 2 hours sometimes!

6. When going out somewhere, do you leave doing your hair to the last minute?
Only if my hair is freshly relaxed, flat ironed or when I plan to rock a braidout. I generally need enough time to get my new growth to lay down 😀

7. Can you commit to spending bans?

8. How organized is your hair products stash?
Well organized.

I tag everyone. You can also share your answers in the comment section below. I’d love to read them.

Thanks for reading 🙂

2 year hair journey anniversary

Yep! today marks 2 years since i started my healthy hair journey.

I also happen to be 8 weeks post relaxer today.

I didn’t start out my journey with a trim. Neither did i take a starting pic. I took my first length-check pic 8 weeks into my hair journey after getting my hair blow dried straight at the salon. My most recent pic is from September so i’m using that for comparison. Need i mention my hair was natural in 2011? I just did, didn’t i? 🙂

December 2011 - September 2013

December 2011 – September 2013

So far, so good.

Lets see, last year at a time like this i was super excited about my hair journey anniversary. I even did a huge hair products’ haul to celebrate 😀 (All i wanted was to get to APL). This time round however, am just…there. I only bought a tub of deep conditioner yesterday and that was it. My short term goal is to get to full BSL.

Don’t get me wrong, am happy with the progress i’ve made and can’t wait to surpass that.

Today’s hair update:
I didn’t cowash my hair this morning. I planned to come home early, wash and deep condition it, let it air dry for a bit then braid it up for tomorrow’s braid out style.

However, its night time in this part of the world and am just about ready to get into my bed. Man, am dead beat. I really need to wash my hair. I’ve been using braid spray and gel to tame my edges…feels like i have a lot of build up. I have some place to be at tomorrow and i don’t know how am going to wear my hair. Thats tomorrow’s problem. I’ll regret this. I know i will, but my bed is calling.

Good night/morning/afternoon/evening
