Am 1 week 4 days post today!

After relaxing my hair last week, i kept it in a wash n go style and as such didn’t comb my hair for that entire week. When it started to look messy i wore it up in a textured ponytail.

At exactly 1 week post, i did a strengthening treatment (henna). I first started off by washing my hair using Enliven shampoo. I don’t normally shampoo my hair before hennaing, but i felt that my hair had a lot of product buildup that needed to be first washed off.

I let my hair air dry completely before applying the henna (which i had prepared hours earlier). I used 100g of henna.

After hennaing for several hours, i rinsed my hair and then did a deep conditioning treatment.

After an hour or so i rinsed off the deep conditioner. By then it was pretty late and i had to go out and pick up a few things for supper so i just clipped my hair up and headed out. I didn’t even attempt to dry it, i just squeezed the excess water out because i didn’t want it to dry quickly.

When i got back, i lightly misted it with water, applied some leave-in conditioner, and some coconut oil and then i finally braided it like so…

I kept the braids in the next day (Wednesday) since i was home all day that day but on Thursday, Friday and today, i rocked a braidout.

Could you please do a post on how you self relax?
I explain the steps i take to relax my hair in all my relaxer update posts. I do the same thing every time. Check out this post from when i self-relaxed for the first time. Also, see the previous post for my latest relaxer update and links to other relaxer day updates.

How do you relax the back part of the head?
Since i can’t see back there, i just use my fingers to feel or estimate the length of my new growth, and then i use an applicator brush to apply the relaxer. Parting my hair into 4 sections and then into even smaller sections makes the application process manageable.

How do you manage to check the timing to prevent over-processing?
The relaxer kit comes with instructions that include a time chart showing how long you should leave the relaxer on your hair depending on your hair type (fine, medium, coarse).

Now, these are just estimates (in my opinion) because i tend to leave the relaxer in my hair for longer than the recommended time (i don’t do it intentionally, am just not fast enough) and my hair always has a good amount of texture left in it. I guess it depends on ones’ hair.

I have to mention that you should not wait for your scalp to start burning for you rinse off the relaxer. A lot of people do this. They assume that the longer you burn, the better the relaxing result. Just time yourself (use a stop-watch or count-down timer), when the time is up, rinse your hair, and use the correct shampoo to wash. It shouldn’t be a painful process.

How do you ensure consistency in hair texture throughout the hair length and parts?
To be honest, the texture of my hair isn’t uniform throughout the hair strand. And the quadrant i relax last always has more texture to it because i always run out of time and don’t let the relaxer sit there for long. But that has never caused me any problem.

If you have relaxed hair and don’t want bone straight hair, tell whoever relaxes it for you to let the relaxer sit on your hair for a short period of time. You can even add a natural oil to the relaxer to weaken it. Alternatively, you can add conditioner to it. Do your research on this before attempting anything.

Should you decide to start relaxing your hair yourself, i suggest practicing using conditioner and an applicator brush all the while timing yourself. Thats what i did. Apply it to your hair as you would a relaxer.

Relaxer update| January

I relaxed my hair last Tuesday (the 20th) at 11 weeks 3 days post. That was a short relaxer stretch for me seeing as i always try to aim for 16 weeks (i usually miss it by a day or two).

The first time i self-relaxed my hair i was at 11 weeks post and i stated then that i would not do such a short stretch again because i kept going over more than just the new growth with the relaxer. This time round, i had no problem so i guess am getting good at this 🙂

Despite working faster, i got relaxer burns. Again. This is the 3rd time its happened. I mentioned the 1st time here and the 2nd time was in November (i don’t have that relaxer update up but i’ll link it below once i publish it.)

Anyway, the relaxer burns keep occurring at the same spots (or so it seems). The second time it happened i assumed it was because i had gotten carried away with the smoothing step. This time i was careful not to smooth too much but that didn’t even help. I guess my scalp is just sensitive in those spots. Next time i’ll relax those areas last and maybe not smooth at all :/

Speaking of not smoothing, that will result in even more textured (texlaxed) hair. I know i said (here) that i would start texlaxing my hair but i couldn’t. I love my current hair texture, but i’ll just roll with whatever texture i get next time from not smoothing.

I randomly decided to relax my hair (out of frustration mostly) so i didn’t do a strengthening treatment as recommended 1 week prior to relaxing hair. This is what my hair looked like that Monday (i relaxed the following day).

To deep condition, i used a mixture of ORS replenishing conditioner, coconut oil and a few drops of peppermint oil. I deep conditioned my hair in the shower for 10-15 minutes. I’d had a long day and just wanted to be done with my wash once and for all (i.e. not coming back after an hour or so to rinse my hair again).

This was right after i got out of the shower. I just squeezed out the excess water and had no products in my hair.

I did a bit of shopping last week.

I had very little deep conditioner left (not even enough for 1 application/treatment) and so i decided to pick up another tub.

Am so glad i got my regular one (the one with fruit extracts) because the one i previously had (with olive extracts) looked horrible to me. I just didn’t like that green colour. It wasn’t like an avocado mix (which i guess is okay)…to me it looked like detergent. Horrible i tell you. But it works fine.

I also picked up a relaxer kit because my new growth was driving me crazy (at 11 weeks post). I was just tired of having to use gel to slick down my edges (almost) daily, and having to deal with puffy roots.

The final purchase was henna. I bought this brand because i cannot seem to find my usual (Nupur henna) anywhere! This one is different from the one i used last month. I’ll do a comparison of the two after my next henna treatment.

The forgotten

After putting up my previous post, i decided to go through my hair products’ stash and i was a little surprised by what i found. I knew i had quite a number of products i that hadn’t used in a while,…what i didn’t know was how many of those i had.

I don’t even know when i bought the green one. The other one is probably from 3 months ago. I just saw the sulfate free, paraben free bit on the bottle and knew i had to have it. Yet another impulse buy 😐

Remember this Alberto Balsam conditioner? Yep. I still have it. Since it didn’t do much for my hair, i started using it to shave (anyone else use conditioners to shave?). I was trying to use it up that way but then somehow, it got stashed away. I used it recently to cowash and i kinda liked it. Whats that about?! Looks like its making a comeback.

There’s a good reason why each of these product is here. The olive oil…well, i have a bigger bottle of it in the kitchen 😀 Almond oil, i only use it on relaxer days…every 4 months or so. Eucalyptus oil made my scalp itch. Castor oil made my hair shed. Am willing to give these last 2 oils another go because, maybe i was wrong about them. I so want them to work for me :/ I’ll just brace myself for major itching and shedding…#thingswedoforlove (sic)

Shea butter to be exact. I bought this a few months ago. Its all natural but i just don’t like it which is why its stashed away. I’ll try and use it up though.

The lottabody setting lotion is probably 2+ years now. I was so excited when i first bought it. I used it for a rollerset attempt (epic fail by the way). Now, well here it is.

The wrap set/mousse sachets are freebies from my relaxer kits. I should use them to set my braidouts and twistouts. I have used 2 satchets for a wash n’ go style though.

Remember this gel? I actually found it to be more of a pomade than a gel but yea, I used it a couple of times not enough times though and now its expired. You’d think for such a small amount i’d have used it up pretty quickly.

I mentioned wanting flexi rods and a curling iron so many times but when i finally bought them, i just couldn’t use them. Here’s why; sleeping with flexi rods on your head is a nightmare. I use only 1 flexi rod to set my ponytail in a curl (overnight). The rest are neatly stashed away…forgotten.

The curling iron on the other hand was a silly purchase. I’ve had it for a year or longer (…probably a year). The plan was to buy a 1″ or 1.5″ curling iron but i bought this 3/4 inch one instead because it was the largest size they had…and i really wanted a curling iron. The temperature on this darn thing only goes up to 150 which is pretty low for my hair so it takes forever to actually create a curl. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

These are the same ones i showed you in My skin care routine post. I stopped using them towards the end of June/July after realizing that they weren’t working for me.

Thanks to my product junkiesm, i now have to toss out a good number of these stuff because i don’t plan on using them. What a waste of cash 😦

Almost a week late, but the year is still young 😀

So, updates. Right?

Hair: Am currently 9 weeks 3 days post relaxer and not much is going on. I actually haven’t blogged about my hair since i relaxed it but you know me, am either wearing it down, in a bun or a ponytail.

Fitness: Am now doing the Focus T25 workout.

I like to watch the workouts i plan to do before actually doing them and when i did that for T25, i remember thinking that it wasn’t as good as Insanity. I thought that by choosing to do it i would in fact be regressing. I was wrong. That first workout had me dripping in sweat! I didn’t even realize 25 minutes were up till Shaun T said “Time” signalling the end of the workout. Am only 5 days into it and even though struggled through yesterday’s workout (Ab intervals), i know i’ll enjoy the next 10 weeks of the program.

Crocheting: In this post i said that i’d make something Christmasy and this is what i came up with…

I remember i made it the Sunday before Christmas and i haven’t made anything else since then. Am thinking of taking a break from making hats so the plan now is to make a crochet blanket/throw. This will be good practice for a baby blanket i plan to make and gift to my soon-to-be-born niece 🙂

My List: I still haven’t added anything new to it but am already working on what i can at the moment and i ‘ve also drawn up a plan and timeline to help me achieve the rest of my goals. I should probably make individual posts whenever i cross something off.

Shopping: I haven’t bought hair products in a long while. I realized that i have more than enough of those so now am just going to use them up before getting more of the same stuff. Remember my 2014 February haul? I still haven’t used the moisturizer i bought then! I also just started using the Suave conditioner from that haul in December! I have henna from last June/July which i forgot about and went out and bought the one pictured below which i used about 2 weeks ago. And am pretty sure if i look through my stash i’ll find products from 2013 😮

Am just going to hold off buying any more products and use the money i’ll save from that (little as it may be) to help me fulfill my 30-by-30 goals.
