Relaxer update|October

I retouched my hair yesterday at exactly 11 weeks post. I was having a bit of a lazy day and didn’t get around to doing my hair till 4pm. I started off by parting my hair onto 4 sections and applying Venus hair food to my scalp and coated the already relaxed part of my hair with the same product. This kept the relaxer from burning my scalp and over processing my hair (respectively).

Once that was done, I took an applicator brush and started the application step. I usually start at the back of my head because the hair there tends to be more coarse than that on the rest of my head. Anyway, after a while i realized that i had forgotten to wear gloves so i had to stop what i was doing and go get them :s

I somehow managed to work pretty fast because even after the smoothing step, i found myself with plenty of time to clean up my work area (aka sink) before hoping into the shower. And i did not experience any burning sensation at all.

In the shower, i rinsed my hair for a really long time before proceeding to the shampooing/neutralizing step. I used the last of my bottled ORS creamy aloe shampoo (but i have 2 sachets of the same left). I had a sachet with me in the shower because i thought i’d need it but a little of this shampoo goes a long way. I did about 4 or 5 shampoo washes (yea, i was in there for a while 🙂 ).

After shampooing, i applied a deep conditioner mix that i had made earlier on. It basically consisted of some left over treatment from last week, ORS replenishing conditioner, Creme of Nature Intensive conditioning treatment and peppermint oil. I was running out of the bottled ORS conditioner which is why i added the Creme of Nature one. Both of these are protein based which is perfect because you want to use something thats protein based right after relaxing your hair.

I left the deep conditioner on my hair for a few minutes as i carried on with the rest of my shower routine. Afterwards i rinsed my hair (first with warm water, then with cold), squeezed the excess water out, clipped my hair up, and then i stepped out of the shower.

Since it was getting late, i didn’t have time to do much else so i switched that blue clip you see above for a bobby pin, did a bit of cleaning in the kitchen, went for grocery shopping, got back and started cooking supper. Later in the night, i lightly misted my hair with water, applied Cantu shea butter leave-in and coconut oil, and then braided it up.

October ‘mini’ haul

oct mini haul

1) Perfect cosmetics hot oil hair cream 2) Eco Styler olive oil gel 3) Cantu Shea butter leave-in conditioning repair cream 4) Creme of Nature Intense conditioning treatment 5) ORS replenishing conditioner

I did some shopping last Friday in preparation for my upcoming relaxer day. I also bought a relaxer kit but forgot to include it in the above picture.

The deep conditioner i got this time has olive extracts. I normally use the one with mixed fruits extracts but they didn’t have it. I haven’t deep conditioned my hair in a long time so am really looking forward to doing that.

I’ve used the Eco Styler gel a couple of times already to slick down my edges for ponytail styles and i love it. I still have some Eco Styler brown gel left over but i really wanted to try out this olive oil one so bad.

Another product that i’ve been looking forward to using is the Cantu Shea butter leave-in conditioning cream. Seriously, i’ve been on the lookout for this product since before the beginning of my hair journey! Of course i forgot all about it but when i saw it on the shelves, i had to have it!

The Creme of Nature Intense conditioning treatment has been on my wishlist ever since i tried out the Moisture and shine sulfate-free shampoo from the same line. I can’t wait to use these two products together!

And finally, the ORS replenishing conditioner. I run out of my first bottle which i’d had for slightly over a year. This product is amazing and i was actually going to purchase the bigger ‘professional-size’ bottle but seeing that the gel, leave-in and CoN treatment were impulse buys, i had to compromise :/

Relaxers

Here in Kenya, we refer to relaxers as perms. I personally use both terms interchangeably. The word perm is actually short for permanent. #totallyrandominfo

Anyways, of late there have been some new relaxers in the market some of which are yet to make their way to this part of the world. First off is the Amla Legend No-Mix, No-Lye Relaxer by SoftSheen Carson. Its from their Optimum care line. It is infused with Amla oil.

Next is the Creme of Nature’s Straight from Eden 100% plant-derived straightening creme. Launched last December.

This one sounds like a healthier option when it comes to relaxing hair. Its infused with coconut oil, avocado oil and olive oil.

Straight from Eden

Last but not least is Beautiful Textures Naturally Straight texture manageability system.

I probably shouldn’t put this under a post titled relaxers because its not a relaxer. Anyways, This product is for anyone looking to go from curly to straight and back to curly (stretchers and naturals) without the use of harsh chemicals.

It works by loosening the curl pattern thus improving manageability for upto 4-6 weeks. Should you want to go back curly before the 4-6 weeks are up, all you have to do is wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo and BAM! your curls are back 😀

Now, don’t take my word with regards to what i’ve posted, am just letting you know whats out there. If you choose to use any of these products (or if you’ve used them) please share your experience 🙂 One thing thats for certain though is that i’ll definitely try this last product (texture manageability system) once it hits our shelves.
