Weekend in the life

Another week, another blog post

Not much going on in hair ville so I thought I’d put up a different kind of post. The goal was to post about my 24hr work day but plans changed so instead, I have bits from the weekend to share with you. Here goes…

I woke up pretty early on Saturday and hydrated. I used the last of my green tea.

Given the kind of day I was going to have, I knew working out was paramount. I don’t work out regularly but when if am going to have a particularly challenging day…working out is a must.

I dilly dallied at some point and had to do a rush job with the showering and getting ready. Thank God I’d done my nails the night before! I didn’t have time for breakfast. I just grabbed a banana and figured I’d have breakfast at the office. I was out the door just in time to make it to my 7am shift.

Of course when I got to the office there was no coffee available. Just tea and Milo so I just shelved the whole breakfast idea. A couple of hours later I was sent out to the field (Ruai) where a building had collapsed. There wasn’t much to do really. We just stood around waiting for the rubble to be cleared so we could get to the people trapped underneath.

Hours later, rescue efforts were still underway. The sun was really beating down on us at that point and I had no qualms when someone handed me a cold packet of milk. And another. I downed a whole liter of milk! Never mind I had a liter of water which I left untouched :/

At some point dark clouds rolled in and it started to rain just like its been raining everyday. I got back to the office at around 5, had a banana and 4 weetabix biscuits for late lunch with milk. Yes. I need a dairy cow at this point. I also mixed in some chia seeds and ground flax seeds.

My shift was supposed to end at 7pm but they let me off at 6:30 when they found out I was heading to the hospital after that for the night shift over there. It was unnecessary but welcome 🙂 I freshened up and off I went. It took me an hour door-to-door so I got to the hospital at around 7:30pm. I didn’t have to go to the hospital. I just enjoy what I do over there and so I go in whenever I can #nosociallife.

I worked until 10:30, went for a tea break. Worked some more and then at around 2 I started yawning and yawning and yawning. Usually I go to sleep at 3-6 during night shifts but this time I was beat. It was time to leave. I ubered, got into bed and was out as soon as my head hit the pillow.

I woke up a number of times after that, staying up just long enough to check the time. Finally at 8 something on Sunday morning I got out of bed, had breakfast and lounged on the couch till 1 something #zeroproductivity. I showered, headed out to lunch, got back home, took a bath…the heat was unbearable that afternoon plus I had walked quite a bit…I needed to freshen up. And then I went to bed at around 5pm. My sleep cycle is totally screwed up.

I woke up at 1 am thinking it was 7am 😐 ate food I had carried home from yesterday lunch – KFC chicken and a twister which is basically a wrap. I got online and put this post together. Am in the 2nd shift at the hospital today so I have a free morning.

Have a great week!

“Artfully messy”

Its been 1 week and 2 days since my last relaxer touch up

This has been my hairstyle for the past week…

A far cry from my sleek bun look

Okay, maybe not artfully done but you get the point. Messy but not so messy. I just use three hair pins to hold my hair in place and am good to go. Can I just mention that I haven’t combed my hair in a week? I plan to keep that up till my next wash day which is hopefully 2 weeks away. Its amazing what you can get away with when you have textured hair! 😀

Of long wash days…

Last Thursday was wash day for me. I’d gone for close to 3 weeks without washing my hair but since I always wore it in a bun, my hair stayed moisturized for the most part and so it didn’t bother me much. However, because I kept slapping gel onto my hair to keep everything sleek (not to mention my daily use of oils) I developed some serious residue build up.

And so I washed my hair.

I just shampooed and used regular rinse out conditioner (no deep conditioning). My hair felt so fresh, light and flowy afterwards. I hadn’t realized how weighed down it had been! I loved it. I didn’t want to add much (if anything) to it and so after applying a leave-in conditioner and an oil, I pulled it back into a ponytail and rocked it like that…flyaways and all. That was my Thursday and Friday hairstyle.

Come Saturday morning, I felt rather drab. I was 10 weeks post by then and itching to do a relaxer touch up. I also realized that my hair was way too light. I needed to do a strengthening treatment. A henna treatment. My last one had been in December…so much for my monthly hennaing plan :/

I decided to do both treatments one the same day – for the record, I’d never done that before. That was going to be a long weekend for me…I even turned down weekend invites and had no shame explaining that I would be occupied doing my hair 😀

Lets just say that I did not do my hair on Saturday but instead spent the entire day in bed. I had come off a night shift that morning and the plan was to sleep till sometime in the afternoon. But…I woke up at around 6:30pm. Anyway, at 9pm, I made a henna paste. I meant to let it sit and release the dye for 3 hours before applying it to my hair but guess what? I fell asleep! Again! Till 6 something the next morning! Am telling you I had so much sleep its unbelievable. Its almost as if I had been drugged!

Note my henna stained nail? Its been that long.

Moving on…on Sunday, I finally got to do my hair. I did a relaxer touch up at around 1pm. There was no power or running water at home but that was not going to deter me. I managed.

After shampooing out the relaxer, I let my hair airdry, run errands, lounged, cooked, did random stuff basically. Of course my hair dried and I had to dampen it in order to have a easy time applying the henna afterwards.

Mid-step henna treatment

I kept the henna in my hair overnight, rinsed it off and then did a deep conditioning treatment on Monday. I thought I had some of the cholesterol treatment I use left over but no. There was very little of it left. I ended up mixing all sorts of products to have something to treat my hair with. I used the left over cholesterol treatment, TRESemme conditioner, ORS hair mayo, ORS replenishing conditioner, Glycerin, avocado, castor, olive and Jamaican black castor oils. I just went for it.

Post henna. No products in my hair

Deep conditioning

After rinsing my hair and applying my products, I let it air-dry in two French braids. I kept the style in for two days – till yesterday since I didn’t need to go anywhere.

Am definitely not looking forward to washing my hair anytime soon. Am currently shooting for 2 weeks but with little-to-no-gel use, I should be able to push it to 3 weeks granted my hair stays moisturized.

Have a blessed week!

My obsession…

…blunt, thick ends!

That’s one of the reasons I’ve been cutting my hair over and over in the past year. My hair doesn’t grow evenly all round. Does anyone’s? Add to that the inevitable wear and tear and this is what I end up with…

Ive been looking at the picture below from my previous post and couldn’t help but wonder what was going on with the hair on the left side of my head.

That side never wants to behave well! Like what’s going on with the ends? I hadn’t noticed how different both sides we’re. I took other pics a week later…

The right side is Fuller for obvious reasons. I initially wanted to even it out but decided against it…that’s being extra I think. Overall, my hair is healthy and looks good. So no more snipping for now.

1.5 more days till wash day (I spotted dandruff!)

What’s your obsession?

Day in the life

Something different…

Here is a little sneak peek into my day to day life.

4:00am Wake up

Yup! Am an early riser. I always have a glass of water in the morning and then sip on coffee for the next two hours or so 😐 For this reason, my huge coffee travel mug is one of my prized possessions. I try to get in at least one hour of study in the morning (I have two papers to sit for this week).

5:15am Shower, get ready, breakfast

This part is quite fun for me because am able to take my time and not do a rush job. The stillness/calmness I experience makes me feel so accomplished. Its a great feeling. I plan my morning the day before which takes out a lot of the decision making and stress from my mornings. I actually have time to sit down and have breakfast in a relaxed manner. It wasn’t always like this.

Avocado on bread with a dash of black pepper

6:00am – 6:30am Leave

7:30am – 12:30pm Work

I’ve been going in for the morning shift which is only 5 hours long. I could extend it if I wanted to but I prefer being home in the afternoons to study. However, after this week, I’ll be done with my course – chill time coming up *yay* I’ll also be able to go in for day-long shifts and also pick up some night shifts. But for now, am all about that half day-student life.

12:45pm Leave

Home time

1:30pm Get home

With no left overs in the fridge and not being in the mood to cook (I actually had no time to cook) The only lunch option I had was a smoothie. Quick and easy. And healthy. I went for a beetroot smoothie on this day. Basically threw what was available into the blender 😀

And then back to studying

I get supper started quite early because I like to eat early and sleep early. I also take this time to clean, tidy up and get my stuff ready for the next day.

And then I study some more…

9:00pm Sleep

Like I said, I like to sleep early. Sometimes am in bed at 8:00!

This was a fun post to put together

Have a great week
