My obsession…

…blunt, thick ends!

That’s one of the reasons I’ve been cutting my hair over and over in the past year. My hair doesn’t grow evenly all round. Does anyone’s? Add to that the inevitable wear and tear and this is what I end up with…

Ive been looking at the picture below from my previous post and couldn’t help but wonder what was going on with the hair on the left side of my head.

That side never wants to behave well! Like what’s going on with the ends? I hadn’t noticed how different both sides we’re. I took other pics a week later…

The right side is Fuller for obvious reasons. I initially wanted to even it out but decided against it…that’s being extra I think. Overall, my hair is healthy and looks good. So no more snipping for now.

1.5 more days till wash day (I spotted dandruff!)

What’s your obsession?

Relaxer update|October

I retouched my hair yesterday at exactly 11 weeks post. I was having a bit of a lazy day and didn’t get around to doing my hair till 4pm. I started off by parting my hair onto 4 sections and applying Venus hair food to my scalp and coated the already relaxed part of my hair with the same product. This kept the relaxer from burning my scalp and over processing my hair (respectively).

Once that was done, I took an applicator brush and started the application step. I usually start at the back of my head because the hair there tends to be more coarse than that on the rest of my head. Anyway, after a while i realized that i had forgotten to wear gloves so i had to stop what i was doing and go get them :s

I somehow managed to work pretty fast because even after the smoothing step, i found myself with plenty of time to clean up my work area (aka sink) before hoping into the shower. And i did not experience any burning sensation at all.

In the shower, i rinsed my hair for a really long time before proceeding to the shampooing/neutralizing step. I used the last of my bottled ORS creamy aloe shampoo (but i have 2 sachets of the same left). I had a sachet with me in the shower because i thought i’d need it but a little of this shampoo goes a long way. I did about 4 or 5 shampoo washes (yea, i was in there for a while 🙂 ).

After shampooing, i applied a deep conditioner mix that i had made earlier on. It basically consisted of some left over treatment from last week, ORS replenishing conditioner, Creme of Nature Intensive conditioning treatment and peppermint oil. I was running out of the bottled ORS conditioner which is why i added the Creme of Nature one. Both of these are protein based which is perfect because you want to use something thats protein based right after relaxing your hair.

I left the deep conditioner on my hair for a few minutes as i carried on with the rest of my shower routine. Afterwards i rinsed my hair (first with warm water, then with cold), squeezed the excess water out, clipped my hair up, and then i stepped out of the shower.

Since it was getting late, i didn’t have time to do much else so i switched that blue clip you see above for a bobby pin, did a bit of cleaning in the kitchen, went for grocery shopping, got back and started cooking supper. Later in the night, i lightly misted my hair with water, applied Cantu shea butter leave-in and coconut oil, and then braided it up.

Happy New Year!

Almost a week late, but the year is still young 😀

So, updates. Right?

Hair: Am currently 9 weeks 3 days post relaxer and not much is going on. I actually haven’t blogged about my hair since i relaxed it but you know me, am either wearing it down, in a bun or a ponytail.

Fitness: Am now doing the Focus T25 workout.

I like to watch the workouts i plan to do before actually doing them and when i did that for T25, i remember thinking that it wasn’t as good as Insanity. I thought that by choosing to do it i would in fact be regressing. I was wrong. That first workout had me dripping in sweat! I didn’t even realize 25 minutes were up till Shaun T said “Time” signalling the end of the workout. Am only 5 days into it and even though struggled through yesterday’s workout (Ab intervals), i know i’ll enjoy the next 10 weeks of the program.

T25

Crocheting: In this post i said that i’d make something Christmasy and this is what i came up with…

Santa hat

Santa hat

I remember i made it the Sunday before Christmas and i haven’t made anything else since then. Am thinking of taking a break from making hats so the plan now is to make a crochet blanket/throw. This will be good practice for a baby blanket i plan to make and gift to my soon-to-be-born niece 🙂

My List: I still haven’t added anything new to it but am already working on what i can at the moment and i ‘ve also drawn up a plan and timeline to help me achieve the rest of my goals. I should probably make individual posts whenever i cross something off.

Shopping: I haven’t bought hair products in a long while. I realized that i have more than enough of those so now am just going to use them up before getting more of the same stuff. Remember my 2014 February haul? I still haven’t used the moisturizer i bought then! I also just started using the Suave conditioner from that haul in December! I have henna from last June/July which i forgot about and went out and bought the one pictured below which i used about 2 weeks ago. And am pretty sure if i look through my stash i’ll find products from 2013 😮

HENNA

Am just going to hold off buying any more products and use the money i’ll save from that (little as it may be) to help me fulfill my 30-by-30 goals.

Thats all the updates i have for now 🙂

Have a blessed year!

Length-check: 3 years in

3 years in

The pics with me in a white tee were taken yesterday and the other pic on relaxer day. I had some trouble taking good shots so these will have to do :/ The only major difference since i took my August length-check pics is the loss of volume, but thats to be expected with freshly relaxed straightened hair.

Getting past Bra-strap-length (BSL) is turning out to be quite the challenge. I feel like i’ve been stuck at this length since last year! Ok, i trimmed my hair back to Armpit-length (APL) this past February (and i got another minor trim 3 months ago) but still,…i need to get over this hump!

Am just going to go ahead and claim full BSL right now and set mid-back length (MBL) as my next goal.

Progress

Random: I used to crop my pics right at top or bottom of my bra strap because thats where my hair would fall. This time though i had to crop the pic a little lower because my hair is longer. Problem? Too much of me is exposed! I’ve had more than one person point out that its interesting how am comfortable showing off my back/bra and not my face. I get you now. No more bra pics 😀 Another thing, love handles. I just became aware of how much of that i have going on. Am going to have to dig deeper with my workouts.

Regular conditioners Vs Deep conditioners

Regular vs Deep conditioners

Regular vs Deep conditioners

So what is the difference between these two types of conditioners?

Perhaps the most commonly known difference is the length of time these products are left on the hair. Regular conditioners, also known as rinse-out or surface conditioners are left on the hair for 2-5 minutes (without heat), while deep conditioners are left on for at least 10-15 minutes (with heat; under a hooded dryer or steamer) or upto 45+ min without heat.

conditioning time

Regular conditioners provide a quick moisture fix that only lasts a couple of days to a week (in my opinion). Deep conditioners on the other hand provide a longer lasting effect…keep hair moisturized for a longer period.

Deep conditioners are basically heavy duty versions of the regular conditioners in that they use higher levels of ingredients that can penetrate the hair strand e.g water, natural oils & shea butter. Glycerin is a key ingredient in most moisturizing products because it’s a humectant (draws moisture from the air to your hair. Honey does the same thing). Using heat while deep conditioning opens the hair cuticles allowing for easier and deeper penetration of the product.

What makes regular conditioners not as effective as deep conditioners is the fact that they mainly contain ingredients meant to smooth the surface of the hair strand…you know, lay down the cuticle so hair isn’t rough and frizzy. These ingredients have very low (or no) penetrative properties so they basically sit on your hair strand, coating it. Thats not all bad because they lock in the moisture so your hair doesn’t dry out, and in some instances provide some level of protection from the harmful UV rays.

October ‘mini’ haul

1) Perfect cosmetics hot oil hair cream 2) Eco Styler olive oil gel 3) Cantu Shea butter leave-in conditioning repair cream 4) Creme of Nature Intense conditioning treatment 5) ORS replenishing conditioner

I did some shopping last Friday in preparation for my upcoming relaxer day. I also bought a relaxer kit but forgot to include it in the above picture.

The deep conditioner i got this time has olive extracts. I normally use the one with mixed fruits extracts but they didn’t have it. I haven’t deep conditioned my hair in a long time so am really looking forward to doing that.

I’ve used the Eco Styler gel a couple of times already to slick down my edges for ponytail styles and i love it. I still have some Eco Styler brown gel left over but i really wanted to try out this olive oil one so bad.

Another product that i’ve been looking forward to using is the Cantu Shea butter leave-in conditioning cream. Seriously, i’ve been on the lookout for this product since before the beginning of my hair journey! Of course i forgot all about it but when i saw it on the shelves, i had to have it!

The Creme of Nature Intense conditioning treatment has been on my wishlist ever since i tried out the Moisture and shine sulfate-free shampoo from the same line. I can’t wait to use these two products together!

And finally, the ORS replenishing conditioner. I run out of my first bottle which i’d had for slightly over a year. This product is amazing and i was actually going to purchase the bigger ‘professional-size’ bottle but seeing that the gel, leave-in and CoN treatment were impulse buys, i had to compromise :/
